ENT Training: Laryngoscopy [[OPEN]]

Lorie was just weeks away from being able to take her licensing test, and be able to work at Saving Grace without working under another physician, but for now, she was working under ear, nose, and throat specialist Dr. Sebastian Wilson. That day she was working in the clinic, waiting to see what patient Dr. Wilson would set up for her.

Ryleigh and Clary walked in. Clary hadn't been feeling great and she wants to get checked out and Randy wanted Ry to take her. Ry Sat down and a he got checked in

Lorie walked out the waiting room to introduce herself to her patient. "Hi there, I'm Loretta. I'm a student under residency here, and I'll be treating you today. Are you alright with that?"

Clary looked and smiled" Yes I'm fine with that. My boyfriend made me come."

"Well, why don' we take you on to the back, and I'll explain to you how this works."

Clary nodded standing up and following her into the back

Lorie lead her into the first open exam room there was.

She walked in and sat down on the table

"What you're set for today is called a laryngoscopy. It's pretty simple, I'm just gonna insert a tiny tube with a camera into your nose, down to your vocal cords so that we can see them, and ask you to make some sounds, and say some words for me so that we can see how your vocal cords behave."

She nodded feeling a little nervous

"I know it sounds kind of scary, but really it's pretty easy," Lorie told her, spraying a long cotton swab with some numbing medication.

Clary nodded trying to relax

"While we let that soak so that we can get you numbed up, I'm gonna just take a real basic look at your throat here, and walk you through some of the things I'm gonna ask you to do," Lorie told her, grabbing a tongue depressor. "Okay, open your mouth for me, please, wide as you can, stick your tongue out as far as it'll go."

She nodded opening her mouth wide and sticking out her tounge

"Okay," she said after a moment, "now, I want you to say 'ah', and I want you to try to hold that out, like you hold a note when you sing for twenty seconds if you can." If she really needed the laryngoscopy, her voice would crack, or give out before she reached twenty.

Clary done it and with her throat hurting it made it hard

Loretta counted in her head to see how many seconds she could hold it.

Clary coughed letting it go

"Fourteen, nearly there," said Lorie. "I want you to keep that twenty in your head, because any time I ask you to hold something, I want you to shoot for that twenty."

Clary nodded

"Now, onece we get this camera in place I'm gonna ask you to say a few things a few different ways, I might ask you just to hold it like I did just now, I might ask you for a few short sounds like if I ask you for four short e's then that's just gonna be 'E. E. E. E.', if I ask you for four, and hold, than you're gonna do those for just like that, but on the fifth one you're gonna try to hold it for those twenty seconds. With the words, I'll ask you those the same way, a few times really short, like 'cat. cat. cat. cat.', or four and hold where you're gonna go 'cat. cat. cat. cat. caaaaaaaaaaaat' and hold that a out for those twenty seconds, okay?"

Clary nodded

"Before we put the camera in, do you have any questions for me?"

"Can I have my friend in the room with me so she can call my boyfriend and let him know what's going on?" Clary asked

Lorie nodded. "Of course. Why don't up run out, and get her, and I'll get the chair ready for you."
